How Old Are You?  The “Snap Back” Test

As we age, free radicals damage the collagen and elastin under the skin.  Additionally, the sub dermal level of the skin dehydrates.  This produces wrinkling.  An indirect measure of your ability to neutralize dangerous free radicals is the “Snap Back” test.  Don’t worry, it won’t hurt (except maybe your ego)

Lay your hand palm down on a firm surface, like a table, and pinch together the skin on the back of your hand and hold it for 5 seconds.  Let go and measure how long it takes the skin to resume its normal smooth appearance.

The results:

For a teenager, the snapback is immediate

For a 40-45 year old, there will be no “snap” but in 3-5 seconds it should be smooth again

For a 60 year old, it will normally take 10-15 seconds to be smooth again

For a 70 year old, the pinch will be visible for 35-60 seconds.

So how old are you?  The good news is that the body is rebuilding connective tissue constantly.  With adequate antioxidant intake (eat lots of fresh fruits & veggies) you can prevent worsening or even improve the integrity of the collagen and elastin throughout your body.
