I recently had a client who was suffering with severe Migraine Headaches – you know the kind of Migraines that cause nausea or vomiting, the kind that put you out of commission for days, the kind that if you don’t catch them at the first sign of symptoms, you’re hooped!!!

After determining her Metabolic Type and sorting out the correct foods for her to be eating, she diligently kept to her list and recorded everything she ate.  She emailed me her food journal every week and I could see that she was still occasionally suffering from these debilitating Migraines.  After about 6 weeks of reading her food journals, I was very frustrated because I couldn’t see a pattern for these headaches because it seemed to be triggered by different foods each time.  I asked her to send me the ingredient lists for the food items she had eaten prior to each of the headaches.

Eureka!!!  MSG was the common denominator.  The list above made it possible for me to figure this out.  My client now has been able to eliminate her Migraines and is thrilled with this discovery.

Do you have any of these health concerns on a consistent basis?:

Burning sensation
Chest pain or difficulty breathing
Depression
Drowsiness
Facial pressure or tightness
Fatigue and disorientation
Headaches
Nausea
Numbness
Obesity
Rapid heartbeat
Tingling
Weakness

All of these symptoms can result from consumption of MSG.  Take care to read your Ingredient lists and, of course, avoid all fast foods which are loaded with MSG, as are most processed foods.  Please go to www.mercola.com and read Dr. Mercola’s article on MSG which goes into much greater detail.

FOOD AND GROCERY PRODUCTS ALMOST ALWAYS CONTAINING MSG:

Flavored potato chips
Flavored nacho chips
Canned soups and dry soup mixes
Gravy mixes
Bullion cubes
Salad dressings
Frozen fish with breading
Jerkies
Canned meats
Box dinners
Breakfast sausage
Any dinner “mix” with a flavor packet
Frozen dinners
International foods
Poultry injected with broth
Vegetarian foods (typically contain yeast extract) like veggie burgers
Meat broths (chicken broth, beef broth)

When you eat fresh, whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, raw nuts, raw seeds, and high quality proteins you can eliminate your risk of exposure to MSG and the horrible side effects that follow.

  1. Great post. This information needs to get out to the public more because so many people have no idea how negatively affected they are by MSG. I am one of those people who suffer from migraines after eating MSG. It’s a really tricky one to figure out because it’s hidden in so many foods. Thanks for this list!

  2. I notice when MSG is included as I start to feel quite edgy. But it is my 11 year old son who really suffers from it – he goes all crabby and unreasonable – all my kids have taken to reading ingredients however we never realised MSG was in other products – hidden away!! Thanks for the info!

  3. Your post is so appreciated.  I recently had Chinese food for dinner and was rewarded with no sleep.  It didn’t occur to me until the following day what had happened.  As my body ages, it is especially important to be vigilant about what I put into it.

  4. Thanks Stone,

MSG is some nasty stuff.  I’m glad you figured out what it was that affected you.  This is one of the risk now of eating in restaurants.  How annoying!!!

  5. Thanks Janine,

Instead of putting kids on Ritalin or some other drug for hyperactivity or other behaviour issues, parents should read food labels and realize that MSG is likely causing the problem.  I’m glad you figured this out.  Please spread the word.

  6. Hi Joy,

I’m glad you found this helpful.  I actually printed the list on a business card so I could keep it in my wallet when shopping.  It helps a lot.

  7. Add to that list diarrhea; I get it every time I have MSG, along with rapid heart rate, stabbing cramps, nausea, and hot flashes. Absolutely miserable. Only “monosodium glutamate” does it though. “Autolyzed yeast extract” also makes me very sick but not as bad. None of the other things affect me, thank goodness. But I avoid MSG like the plague and try to eat as many all-natural foods as possible.

    Great post!

  8. Hi Heather,

Thanks for letting me know about those other symptoms.  It’s quite shocking really what this chemical can do to the human body.  What’s worse is that people are consuming it everyday and don’t even know it.  I really appreciate the feedback and so will other readers.
